the snow-peas


cool in my fingers


I pluck morning

Chie Kameyama, from Tokyo, married a Japanese-Canadian and emigrated to Canada. They both were interned and separated in relocation camps in British Columbia during World War II. She taught Japanese to Canadian Nisei and others. This haiku is from her bilingual collection called “Seasons in New Denver.”
